Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Main Content

An ITIN is an identification number issued by the IRS to individuals who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). This number serves as an identification number to file taxes and get a tax refund from income withheld by the IRS, but can also be used to open bank accounts and apply for loans.

An ITIN is not a substitute for an SSN and cannot be used to obtain a driver's license, work authorization, or Social Security benefits. You may not have both an ITIN and an SSN.

More information and locations of IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers in Illinois that can authenticate copies of your Passport/identification documents can be found here and a list of central Illinois IRS Acceptance Agents who can assist you in filing your tax return and ITIN application(s) for a fee is here (pdf).

Please note that as of April 30, 2020, all IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are closed due to COVID-19. Acceptance Agents may also be closed. Contact them to find out hours of service, if any, and amount of fee they charge.
